Harry Kane has always taken his career extremely seriously - to the point he was desperate to replicate Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Just like the two footballing icons, who are largely recognised as the two best players of all time, every minute detail must be looked over to maximise their potential.

That includes their diet and nutrition on a daily basis, never missing a meal and never missing the right type of meal either.

Kane realised this early into his career at the age of 24, just as he prepared to take over from Wayne Rooney as permanent England captain.

Prior to his dietary changes, one criticism that could be levelled at the then-youngster was his physicality and Tottenham even loaned him out to EFL clubs Leyton Orient and Millwall to toughen him up.

While he performed well at both, his first Premier League loan to Norwich ended after just three appearances due to injury and he was back to square one, also failing to impress on loan at Leicester after being recalled and being sent out again in 2012/13.

However, the striker changed it around at Tottenham when he broke into the first-team properly a season later - then going on to score 59 times across two years before having his food-based epiphany.

In 2017, Kane went as far as to hire a personal chef, who prepared his meals specifically tailored to his everyday needs.

There were question marks over whether or not Kane was over-utilised, especially at Tottenham, where they were dependent on his goals.

It even meant that the striker was forced to play through minor injuries and fatigue - which could have a knock-on effect over the summer when England were taking part in tournaments.

Such a problem has affected star players before for the Three Lions, including Rooney, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.

Kane was also a victim of fatigue at Euro 2016 where England faltered and the frontman failed to score once as Iceland shocked the nation and forced Roy Hodgson to resign.

Harry Kane stands awkwardly as hundreds of Bayern Munich fans serenade him to the tune of Jingle Bells

“I think, over the last year or so now, I’ve changed a lot off the pitch with the nutrition side of it,” Kane told the Telegraph in 2017.

“It kind of clicked in my head that a football career is so short. It goes so quickly, you have to make every day count.

“So, I have a chef at home to eat the right food, helping recovery.

"You can’t train as hard as you’d like when you have so many games, so you have to make the little gains elsewhere, like with food. That will help me going into a tournament year, with my body and my recovery.”

It proved completely revolutionary as his performances for England at Euro 2016 and the World Cup 2018 could not be further apart.

At the Euros, Kane failed to hit the net once but just two years later, he scored six - including a hat-trick against Panama - that saw him win the Golden Boot ahead of Kylian Mbappe, Ronaldo and Messi.

And the difference in size was significant, going from relatively scrawny to a bulky, almost old-school No. 9, that could not be bustled off the ball and shook defenders off like leaves.

Diet is so important for players nowadays while stars have all dreamt of replicating Messi and his feats and Ronaldo and his net worth.

“I appreciate good players,” Kane said. “Messi and Ronaldo, they’re doing it every week consistently.

"That’s what I aspire to do. It’s good to have the appreciation, but I have to focus on what I want to do.”

And while many might consider rivalling Messi and Ronaldo, very few ever get close - but Kane did - and in 2017 his diet change made a huge difference to his form.

It saw him score 36 times in 31 appearances, winning the Golden Boot in the process, for Tottenham over the year - nine fewer than Messi at Barcelona in the same time period but also in 12 fewer games.

But Kane did outscore Ronaldo, who netted 31 in 34 appearances for Real Madrid, while the Spurs man also hit five in five for England.

Not bad for a 24-year-old, who has since solidified himself as one of the best strikers in recent history and joined Bayern Munich last summer in a quest for trophies.

Speaking seven years ago, Kane added: “I was always eating well, never badly.

“But I have a guy come round and he explained what you could do, eating the right food at the right times.

"You could eat healthily all week and then carbs [carbohydrates] before a game, and that could make your body go into shock because you’re not used to it.

"So, maybe higher carbs sometimes, lower other times, making plans around training. I started doing that on Jan 1, a New Year resolution.

“I met the guy in December. I spoke to him and it blew me away a bit. I’d never looked too much into it, but when he explained what the body does and how he could help me recover…

"He helped me in the recovery from the [ankle ligament] injury, with certain foods I was eating. It opened my eyes a bit.

“He’s there [at Kane’s home] every day, Monday to Saturday, and leaves it in the fridge for Sunday. I hardly ever see him because I’m at training, but he’ll cook the food and leave it in the fridge. We’ve got a good plan going and it seems to be working.

“It’s a big part of football nowadays. Other players are doing the same thing. My career has gone so quick already, I want to make the most of it.”

Now at Bayern aged 30, Kane's diet has kept him in tip-top shape as he looks to extend his career well into the next decade of his life, breaking records for fun.

Getting a taste of goals in Germany, it helps that Euro 2024 goes ahead there this summer and the England captain has his sights set on leading the Three Lions to glory.

Having overtaken Rooney as England's record goalscorer with 62 goals in 89 appearances, the London-born star can finally rub shoulders with the elite with an international trophy.

Ronaldo has won the Euros and the Nations League with Portugal while Messi tipped the GOAT debate in his favour by winning the World Cup with Argentina in 2022.

Already seen as one of the best players on the planet, England's route to Euro glory will rely on Kane, as well as Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.

And that means sticking to the diet for Kane, one that has served him well for years of his career and possibly the next one - as he looks to switch sports.

To truly replicate Ronaldo and Messi would be to replicate their longevity at the top level and that means staying fully fit and not having too many cheat meals.

Although Kane does have one weakness and when asked what his guilty pleasure was, he admitted: "Apple crumble!"
