Richard Keys has decided to stick the boot in on Birmingham City’s owners Knighthead after the club edged towards relegation to League One.

Blues stand on the brink of dropping to the third tier of English football after a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town on Saturday. Blues have to beat Norwich City on the final day and hope results elsewhere go in their favour to avoid relegation.

Keys – the former Sky Sports presenter who now hosts Premier League matches on beIN Sports – has no sympathy with Blues due to Knighthead’s sacking of John Eustace. Eustace was dismissed in October and replaced by former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney.

“As we prepare to watch the last day of the Championship season I can’t help but think Birmingham deserve to go down,” Keys wrote in his weekly blog. “What a mess they made of their season.

“Think back - they were sixth when they fired John Eustace. I feel sorry for their fans, who were promised too much and were delivered nothing. It’s another lesson in being careful what you wish for.”

Blues have been statistically the second worst team in the Championship, ahead of only Rotherham United, since Rooney succeeded Eustace. Ironically, Eustace’s Blackburn Rovers are one of the teams Blues could yet climb above on the final day.
