It was bound to surface at one point, and indeed it has done. According to Italian aggregator tuttomercatoweb (TMW), Serie A giants Roma are eyeing up Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa.
TMW, citing stories in Italian publications Il Messaggero and Gazzetta dello Sport, say that Roma are “probing the terrain for two foreign technicians” with a view to leading the Giallorossi next season.
Argentinian coaching legend Bielsa is one of those mentioned in the short article, the other being current Monaco boos Leonard Jardim.
Bielsa’s arrival at Elland Road was more than a coup for the Whites, and it had instant results. With a handful of youngsters promoted from the Under-23s, some loan signings and a couple of marquee arrivals, Bielsa has transformed an underperforming, mid-table side into one challenging for promotion to the Premier League.
What Bielsa brought with him to eland Road was not just expertise but ideas and a formula. It is the combination of these that has threaded together and knitted into a series of performances that has seen the Whites flirt with the top spot currently held by Norwich City.
It is understandable, nay inevitable in a way, that this has been spotted by outfits higher up the football league ladder. In an off-hand way, it is a compliment to Leeds United in how Bielsa’s presence has allowed them to turn a corner and be pointed in the right direction.
Will it take Leeds United going up to keep Bielsa at Elland Road? Possibly. Will Roma still chance their luck and try to land him if Leeds do climb out of the Championship? Potentially. In truth, no one knows and it is something that will all be resolved at the end of the season.
