Former Leeds United favourite reflects on Whites promotion glory

Middlesbrough midfielder Jonny Howson has been looking back on his time at Leeds United, reflecting fondly on his promotion campaign with the Whites in the 2010/11 campaign.

Jonny Howson left Leeds United back in 2012 to join Norwich City and in doing so, he brought an end to a memorable time with the club. He came through the Whites’ youth academy and went on to make over 200 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals and providing 22 assists in the process.

Now, speaking to Leeds Live, Howson has been reflecting on his favourite memory of his time at the club. While some may have expected it to be the 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, he has revealed that it was in fact winning promotion from League One to the Championship.

Howson came off the bench in a final day of the season win over Bristol Rovers to secure a place in the second tier.

“Promotion,” said Howson when asked what was his favourite memory during his time at Elland Road.

“Just because it actually achieved something, don’t get me wrong, beating Man U in the FA Cup was a tremendous achievement but actually getting promotion in the manner that we did, if I had to pick one. But a lot of great memories.

“Funnily enough, I remember quite a lot of it. I remember being sat on the bench, Max gets sent off, go down to ten men, they scored just after half-time. I must admit sometimes when you’re sat there and you can’t affect it, you’re thinking it could be the play-offs again.

“But obviously, when you get the call, you’re just trying to affect the game, give a bit of a lift. Luckily I managed to do that, and Jermaine managed to do what he does best, puts the ball in the back of the net and gets us the win.”
